You will easily find the right premium for your trip by taking these hints:

  • This au pair insurance can be booked by everybody up to 30 years of age, staying abroad (not in your home country) for up to 3 years as an au pair. It is also available for foreign au pairs, entering Germany or Austria for an au pair stay.
  • Non-insurable persons: permanent care recipient, mental patient, professional athlets.
  • Insurer is HanseMerkur Reiseversicherung AG.
  • Online booking is possible at any time before entry and within 31 days after entry (when staying in Germany).
  • Only your age at the date of departure is crucial for your premium.
  • This travel insurance needs to be booked for the entire journey time including outward and return journey (max. 2 days).
  • maximum insurance period: 3 years
  • If your travel plan is changing while you already abroad, you can prolong your policy up to 3 years. The additional premium is exactly counted for the extended time. Please contact us via Email before your present policy expires.
  • If you return earlier than expected to your home country, premiums paid for the remaining travel time will be refunded. Please keep your boarding card or any other document that states the date of your return und get in touch with us when you are back home.
  • Your insurance coverage ends when your policy expires or when your au pair stay ends. There is no insurance coverage in your home country. Exception: If you have insured at least 12 months, insurance coverage in home country (max. 6 weeks per insurance year) is included in case of break of your au pair stay for a visit at home (see: benefits).
  • In case of change of homestay familiy, insurance coverage can be transferred to your new homestay famiily. Please contact us in that case.

A. travel health insurance
costs of medical treatment:

  • outpatient medical treatment: stays in Germany according to medical fee schedule, stays in other countries 100 %
  • in-patient medical treatment (shared room): stays in Germany according to medical fee schedule, stays in other countries 100 %
  • unpostponable surgery
  • ambulance service for in-patient medical treatment
  • medication, bandaging material
  • massages, medical dressings, inhalations (max. 250 € per year)
  • medical appliances due to an accident
  • painkilling dental treatment, including simple fillings and measures of restoring the function of existing dentures in Germany: according to medical fee schedule (max. 2.3-fold tariff)
  • painkilling dental treatment, including simple fillings and measures of restoring the function of existing dentures in other countries: up to 250 € per year at 100 %, additional costs up to 1,000 € per year at 50 %
  • pregnancy already existing when entering Europe and treatment not already neccessary at that time: medically indicated treatment during pregnancy due to acute medical condition, due to premature birth (up to 36. week of pregnancy), due to induced abortion
  • pregnancy not existing when entering Europe: prenatal exam, medically indicated treatment, medical treatment due to abortion
  • delivery (waiting period 8 months)
  • medically prescribed radiation, light and other physical treatments
  • X-ray diagnostics
  • medically neccessary rehabilitation

no deductible

follow-up treatment abroad (not in home country):

  • if travelling back to home country as scheduled is not possible because the insured person is unable to be transported due to medical reasons, insurances benefits will be provided abroad until the insured person can be transported back home (max. 3 months)

return transport, repatriation and funeral costs:

  • medically reasonable return transport to the nearest hospital in the home country of the insured person (if return transport is medically reasonable, will be decided by the contractual physician of the insurer in consultation with the treating physician abroad)
  • transportation of the deceased to the permanent place of residence (max. 10,000 €)
  • funeral costs abroad (up to the amount of transport costs to the home country)

pre-existing conditions:
Medical treatment of illness, medical conditions (also resulting of an accident) including follow-up treatment of such become neccessary during your stay are not insured, if illness or medical conditions already have been existing or actually are under medical treatment at the time your insurance policy starts.

limitation of insurance coverage:

  • foreseeable expenses (regular purchasing of medicine, regular check-up’s eg.)
  • cure, sanatorium or rehabilitation treatment
  • treatment by spouses, parents or children
  • treatment by persons living together with you (including homestay family)

B. travel accident insurance

  • no excess
  • payment of an indemnity in case of death or invalidity as a result of an accident during the journey
  • in case of total disability: progression of amount insured up to 350 %
  • search, salvage and rescue costs, transport of the insured person to hospital or to place of permanent residence (if ordered by a doctor) up to 2,500 €
  • additional costs for return travel, if ordered by a doctor and unavoidable due to the type of injury
  • return transport to home country in case of death by an accident
  • first-time cosmetic surgery, if medically neccessary due to an addicent
  • also insured: passengers of an airplane crash and sports accidents (except  of parachuting/skydiving, training and participation in motor vehicle events)
  • excluded: exercise of profession

C. private liability insurance:

  • private liability damage claims against insured persons
  • requirement: damage event during the journey resulting in death, injury, poor health (personal damage) or destruction of goods (property damage)
  • professional liability insurance for au pair, if claims are made against the au pair itself and if no other insurance coverage existing
  • damage to temporarily rented premises limited to 25,000 € (excluded: movable items, heating, warm water, electical or gas devices)
  • costs for deportation of the au pair, if ordered by German authorities (max. 1,000 €, deductible 10 %, at least 100 €)
  • excluded: any damage related to keeping, driving or owning a motor vehicle (private travel liability insurance is not a third-party vehicle insurance)
  • included: examination and defense of valid claims
  • excluded: claims of relatives living in your family, fellow travellers or due to exercise of your profession
  • deductible only in case of damage to rented rooms: 10 % (minimum 125 €)

outpatient or in-patient treatment:

  • You can consult any doctor or hospital available at your destination (free choice). A prior coordination with HanseMerkur Reiseversicherung AG is not necessary.
  • In case of emergency please contact the emergency phone number 24 hours a day: (country code for Germany usually +49)-180-5256256 (charges from foreign countries plus 0,14 €/min when calling by landline number or 0,42 €/min by mobile phone).
  • In any case, a medically reasonable return transport will exclusively be arranged by the emergency call center in co-operation with the doctor / hospital in charge at the destination.
  • Outpatient treatment must be prepaid by the insured person. Please request written diagnostic analysis, the doctor´s bills, receipts and prescriptions. They can be produced in any language or currency.
  • If in-patient treatment is necessary, please immediately contact HanseMerkur. It is possible to arrange direct billing between the hospital and HanseMerkur. Please keep your policy number ready when calling the emergency phone number (country code for Germany usually +49)-180-5256256 (charges from foreign countries plus 0,14 €/min when calling by landline number or 0,42 €/min by mobile phone)
  • Please submit your claim to HanseMerkur including original documents (treatment) as well as damage notice (see below) after returning home by mail to: HanseMerkur Reiseversicherung AG, Abt. RLK / Schaden, Siegfried-Wedells-Platz 1, D-20354 Hamburg.
  • If you prefer to submit your claim already while on journey, we recommend to send all documents through an international courier service in order to avoid the risk of loss of documents.
  • In the event of damage, the following documents must be sent to HanseMerkur: copy of the travel confirmation or invoice, insurance policy, your full address and bank account details (incl. IBAN and BIC/SWIFT), damage notice, original documents issued by the doctor or hospital.
