multi-trip travel health insurance (worldwide)

An adequate solution for all travellers living in Austria and staying abroad several times per year, looking for travel health insurance for their journeys. Applicable to an unlimited number of trips within the insurance year:

Your multi-trip policy will automatically prolong, if not cancelled at the end of an insurance year.

You will easily find the right premium for your trip by taking these hints:

  • Multi-trip travel health insurance can be booked by everybody. Insurer is HanseMerkur Reiseversicherung AG.
  • It is not required that you are insured in Germany or in any other home country while you are on your journey. Please not: There is no insurance coverage in your home country.
  • Only your age at the begin of the insurance year is crucial for the premium. It you reach an age limit during the insurance year, there must be made a new online booking for the following insurance year and your present policy must be cancelled.
  • family premiums: the age of the eldest adult is crucial for the premium.
  • The insurance coverage is valid worldwide except of Germany or other home country. Home countries are countries around the world, where you have a registered residence.
  • Your multi-trip policy is applicable to all trips, which are booked at the time of or later as your policy has been booked (no retroactive insurance coverage).
  • Maximum trip lenght: 56 days per private trip or 10 days per business trip.
  • Definition of family: 1 or 2 adults + children up to 21 years of age, living in a joint household. 
  • Newborns born before departure are included in your multi-trip policy until end of present insurance year. Newborns born during a trip are included up to max. 50,000 € and must be included fully by booking a new policy after termination of the present insurance year. 
  • Payment of multi-trip policies must be made by direct debit. If a premium is not paid successfully, insurance coverage ends automatically.
  • All multi-trip policies will automatically prolong, if not cancelled at the end of an insurance year.
  • Notice must be given in writing until 3 months before end of the insurance year.

limitations in time:

Insurance coverage ends in any case including not closed insurance cases (not finished treatments abroad) if:

  • end of the stay abroad
  • first or following premiums are not paid successfully
  • maximum insured lenght of insured trips is reached (private trips: 56 days, business trips: 10 days)

There is no insurance coverage, if treatments started abroad must be continued in home country.

costs of medical treatment abroad:

  • outpatient medical treatment
  • in-patient medical treatment
  • unpostponable surgery
  • ambulance service for in-patient medical treatment
  • medication, bandaging material
  • medical appliances (if becoming neccessary due to an accident)massages, medical dressings, inhalations and physiotherapy (max. 300 € per trip)
  • painkilling dental treatment, including simple fillings and measures of restoring the function of existing dentures
  • medically indicated treatment during pregnancy due to acute medical condition, medically induced abortion
  • insurance coverage of € 50.000 for newborn babies in case of premature birth (up to 36. week of pregnancy)
  • medically prescribed radiation, light and other physical treatments
  • X-ray diagnostics

follow-up treatment abroad:

  • if travelling back to home country as scheduled is not possible because the insured person is unable to be transported due to medical reasons, insurances benefits will be provided abroad until the insured person can be transported back home

return transport, repatriation and funeral costs:

  • medically reasonable return transport to the nearest hospital in the home country of the insured person (if return transport is medically reasonable, will be decided by the contractual physician of the insurer in consultation with the treating physician abroad)
  • although medically not necessary, additional costs of return travel will be covered, if the in-patient treatment abroad will last for at least 14 days and/or costs of medical treatment abroad will exceed costs of a return transport
  • costs of an insured fellow traveller accompanying the insured person, if it is medically necessary, ordered by authorities or required by the transport company
  • additional costs for return travel by any common available means of transportation (lowest class), if in-patient treatment lasts for more than 3 days
  • transportation of the deceased to the permanent place of residence (max. 10,000 €)
  • funeral costs abroad (up to the amount of transport costs to the home country)

limitation of insurance coverage:

  • foreseeable expenses (regular purchasing of medicine, regular check-up’s eg.)
  • normal health care during an uncomplicated pregnancy (unexpected complications covered)
  • treatment by spouses, parents or children

outpatient or in-patient treatment:

  • You can consult any doctor or hospital available at your destination (free choice). A prior coordination with HanseMerkur Reiseversicherung AG is not necessary.
  • In case of emergency please contact the emergency phone number 24 hours a day: (country code for Germany usually +49)-180-5256256 (charges from foreign countries plus 0,14 €/min when calling by landline number or 0,42 €/min by mobile phone).
  • In any case, a medically reasonable return transport will exclusively be arranged by the emergency call center in co-operation with the doctor / hospital in charge at the destination.
  • Outpatient treatment must be prepaid by the insured person. Please request written diagnostic analysis, the doctor´s bills, receipts and prescriptions. They can be produced in any language or currency.
  • If in-patient treatment is necessary, please immediately contact HanseMerkur. It is possible to arrange direct billing between the hospital and HanseMerkur. Please keep your policy number ready when calling the emergency phone number (country code for Germany usually +49)-180-5256256 (charges from foreign countries plus 0,14 €/min when calling by landline number or 0,42 €/min by mobile phone)
  • Please submit your claim to HanseMerkur including original documents (treatment) as well as damage notice (see below) after returning home by mail to: HanseMerkur Reiseversicherung AG, Abt. RLK / Schaden, Siegfried-Wedells-Platz 1, D-20354 Hamburg.
  • If you prefer to submit your claim already while on journey, we recommend to send all documents through an international courier service in order to avoid the risk of loss of documents.
  • In the event of damage, the following documents must be sent to HanseMerkur: copy of the travel confirmation or invoice, insurance policy, your full address and bank account details (incl. IBAN and BIC/SWIFT), damage notice, original documents issued by the doctor or hospital.
